Description and objectives of APUO

L’APUO est une association professionnelle et, depuis 1976, un syndicat aux termes de la Loi des relations de travail de l’Ontario. L’association est l’agent négociateur exclusif de tous les 960 employés qui font partie de l’unité de négociation qu’elle représente. L’unité comprend les professeurs (autres que les professeurs invités), les professeurs de langues, les conseillers, les bibliothécaires et certains chercheurs boursiers. L’APUO est gérée par un comité exécutif, sous la direction d’un conseil d’administration.

APUO is both a professional association and a union certified in 1976 under the Ontario Labour Relations Act. It is the exclusive bargaining agent for the 960 employees in the bargaining unit which it represents; the unit includes professors (other than visiting professors), language teachers, counsellors, librarians, and certain research fellows. The business of APUO is conducted by an Executive Committee, under the direction of a Board of Directors.

L’APUO est affiliée aux associations suivantes: "L’Union des associations des professeurs des universités de l’Ontario" (UAPUO), et L’Association canadienne des professeurs d’université" (ACPU). L’APUO peut également s’affilier à d’autres associations ou organisations ainsi qu’on le déterminera de temps à autre en vertu de réglement B.

The APUO is affiliated with the following associations: "The Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations" (OCUFA), and "The Canadian Association of University Teachers" (CAUT). The Association may also affiliate with other associations or organizations as determined from time to time under by-law B.

Objet

Object

L’Association a pour objet général la promotion des intérêts et du bien-être de ses membres par la négociation collective et par d’autres moyens appropriés. À cette fin et de façon à contribuer à la réalisation des objectifs de l’Université d’Ottawa, l’Association s’efforce de:

The general object of the APUO is to promote the interests and welfare of its members through collective bargaining and other appropriate means. To this end and for the furtherance of the objectives of the University of Ottawa, the APUO endeavors to:

• maintenir des normes universitaires et professionnelles élevées;

• faire reconnaître et respecter la liberté universitaire, et obtenir et maintenir des conditions convenables d’emploi et de permanence;

• respecter le bilinguisme et le biculturalisme;

• s’occuper de toute question universitaire et professionelle concernant ses membres.

• maintain high academic and professional standards;

• gain recognition and respect for academic freedom, and secure and maintain adequate conditions of employment and tenure;

• respect bilingualism and biculturalism;

• deal with any academic and professional question relevant to the membership.

En plus, l’APUO:

• s’implique dans le lobbying au niveau provincial ou national (par le truchement de l’UAPUO et de l’ACPU);

• participe à la sélection du récipiendaires des prix d’enseignements et du recherche, ainsi qu’aux témoignages d’honneur que leur sont rendus;

• distribue un certain nombre de bourses à des étudiants soigneusement sélectionnés;

• offre des renseignments sur la disponibilité de logement.

In addition, the APUO:

• engages in lobbying (through OCUFA and CAUT) on the provincial and national levels;

• is involved in the selection and recognition of the recipients of the research and teaching

• awards;

• distributes a number of bursaries to carefully selected students;

• provides members with information on accommodations.
