| 1. PRIX | 1. THE AWARD |
| 1.1 Le PRIX D'EXCELLENCE EN RECHERCHE DE L'UNIVERSITÉ D'OTTAWA, ci-après appelé le prix, est parrainé par l'Université d'Ottawa (l'Université), l'Association des professeurs de l'Université d'Ottawa (l'APUO) et l'Association des anciens de l'Université d'Ottawa (l'Association des anciens). | 1.1 The UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH, hereinafter referrred to as the award, is an award sponsored by the University of Ottawa (the University), the Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa (APUO), and the Alumni Association of the University of Ottawa (the Alumni Association). |

| 2. BUT | 2. OBJECTIVE |
| Le prix a pour objet de souligner l'importance de la recherche à l'Université d'Ottawa en honorant chaque année un membre du personnel enseignant qui, en raison de l'importance et du caractère exceptionnel de ses travaux de recherche, a acquis personnellement et a procuré à l'Université une réputation d'excellence. | The objective of the award is to focus attention on research at the University of Ottawa by recognizing annually a member of its teaching staff who has earned distinction for herself and for the University as a result of the importance and exceptional characteristics of her research work. |
| 3. PRIX ET CONFÉRENCE PUBLIQUE | 3. THE AWARD AND PUBLIC LECTURE |
| 3.1 Le lauréat (le chercheur de l'année) reçoit une prime octroyée par les organismes participants. | 3.1 The recipient of the award (the Researcher of the Year) shall receive an honorarium, as provided by the sponsoring organizations. |
| 3.2 Le prix est remis lors d'une cérémonie appropriée qui a lieu normalement au printemps de l'année où le prix est décerné. | 3.2 The award will be presented to the recipient in the course of an appropriate ceremony, normally held in the spring of the year in which the award is made. |
| 3.3 La cérémonie est habituellement précédée d'une conférence publique (la Conférence du prix de recherche), prononcée par le lauréat et fondée sur ses travaux de recherche; elle devrait être présentée en termes non techniques et de façon à susciter l'intérêt, en fonction d'un auditoire cultivé qui ne connaît pas nécessairement le domaine de recherche en question. Sans être obligatoire, le recours aux deux langues officielles au cours de l'exposé est souhaitable. | 3.3 The award ceremony will normally be preceded by a public lecture (the Research Lecture) by the recipient of the award. The lecture, arising out of the recipient's research, should present the recipient's work on a non-technical level and in an interesting fashion, as appropriate to a cultivated audience which lacks professional knowledge in the recipient's field. It is desirable but not obligatory that the speaker present some material in English and some in French. |
| 4. COMITÉ DU PRIX DE RECHERCHE | 4. RESEARCH AWARDS COMMITTEE |
| L'administration des prix et le choix des lauréats relèvent du COMITÉ DU PRIX D'EXCELLENCE EN RECHERCHE DE L'UNIVERSITÉ D'OTTAWA (le Comité du prix de recherche). La composition et le mandat du Comité sont précisés ci-après. | Administration of the award and selection of recipients shall be the responsibility of the COMMITTEE FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH (the Research Awards Committee). The composition and terms of reference of the Committee shall be as set out herein. |
| 5. CRITÈRES DE SÉLECTION | 5. SELECTION CRITERIA |
| 5.1 Le prix doit reconnaître le fait que le chercheur a acquis personnellement et a procuré à l'Université une réputation d'excellence, en raison de l'importance et du caractère exceptionnel de ses travaux de recherche dans l'une ou l'autre des disciplines parrainées par l'Université. Le terme recherche est pris dans son sens le plus large pour désigner tout travail productif et original dans l'une ou l'autre des branches de la connaissance représentées à l'Université. | 5.1 It is intended that the award recognize contributions to research which have earned distinction for the researcher and for the University as a result of the importance and exceptional characteristics of her research work in any of the fields of study sponsored by the University. The term 'research' must be interpreted in its broadest sense, referring to any original, productive scholarship in any of the fields of learning represented in the University. |
| 5.2 Généralement, le candidat devrait déjà avoir publié des travaux largement reconnus. Ceux-ci représentent normalement une façon importante d'appuyer la candidature, étant entendu que dans certains cas la publication de travaux reconnus peut être reportée pour des raisons valables. | 5.2 In general, the candidate should have already published work which is widely recognized. This will commonly be a major part of the evidence documenting the candidate's contributions, although there may well be instances in which publication of well recognized work is long delayed for good reasons. |
| 5.3 Au cours de ses délibérations, le Comité tient compte des facteurs suivants: i) les différences entre les disciplines et des exigences particulières des écoles professionnelles; ii) les sources et modes de financement requis pour ce genre de travail; iii) l’approche adoptée (ainsi, on tiendra compte du fait que le travail est le produit des efforts de nombreux chercheurs d’une «équipe de recherche» ou de ceux d’un seul chercheur); iv) les lettres (au moins 5) des évaluateurs externes qui ont été sollicitées par la faculté afin de déterminer l'importance et l'influence des contributions du membres dans son domaine d'activités (ces lettres devront préciser quels renseignements permettent d'affirmer que le chercheur a acquis personnellement et a procuré à l'Université une réputation d'excellence, en raison de l'importance et du caractère exceptionnel de ses travaux de recherche). | 5.3 In making its selection of a recipient, the Committee will give cognizance to the following factors: i) differences among disciplines and the special requirements of professional schools; ii) sources and types of funding required for such work; iii) the approach taken (for example, whether the work resulted from the efforts of several researchers of a ‘research team’ or from those of a single individual); iv) letters (at least 5) from external assessors who will be asked by the faculty to assess the importance of the member's contributions within her field and how the research work influenced the discipline (the letter shall specify what information allows them to state that the researcher has earned distinction for herself and for the University as a result of the importance and exceptional characteristics of her research work). |
| 5.4 Seuls les membres permanents ou ayant un poste menant à la permanence, appelés ci-après membres réguliers, et les membres de départements cliniques, dans la mesure où ils participent activement à l’enseignement et à la supervision aux niveaux du premier cycle et des cycles supérieurs ainsi qu’au service à la collectivité, sont admissibles au prix. | 5.4 Only members with tenure or on a "tenure-track" appointment, hereinafter referred to as regular members, and members of clinical departments in so far as they are actively involved at the undergraduate and graduate levels in teaching and supervision and in service to the community, are eligible for the award. |
| 6. MISES EN CANDIDATURE | 6. NOMINATION PROCEDURE |
| 6.1 Les anciens et les membres du personnel enseignant ou administratif de l'Université peuvent proposer des candidats au prix. Les mises en candidature sont présentées au doyen de la faculté du candidat. | 6.1 A nomination for the award may be initiated by any University of Ottawa alumnus or alumna, faculty member, or administrator. Nominations should be addressed to the dean of the nominee's faculty. |
| 6.2 Le Comité du personnel enseignant de la faculté choisit une candidature qui est transmise au Comité du prix de recherche. Le Comité du personnel enseignant prépare un mémoire sur cette candidature et le doyen la transmet, avec les documents à l'appui et sa propre recommandation, au Comité du prix de recherche. | 6.2 The Teaching Personnel Committee of the faculty shall select the nomination which is to be forwarded to the Research Awards Committee. The Teaching Personnel Committee shall prepare a brief in support of the selected candidate and the dean shall forward it, along with appropriate supporting documentation and her own recommendation, to the Research Awards Committee. |
| 6.3 Les mises en candidature doivent se faire aussi objectivement que possible et sur une base étendue. Tout renseignement pertinent peut être présenté au Comité, mais la documentation doit englober: | 6.3 Nominations for the award should be made as objectively as possible and should be broadly based. Any relevant evidence may be submitted to the Committee. The submitted documentation should, in any event, include: |
| (a) une présentation d’une page, rédigée par le candidat, et décrivant son domaine de recherche et la façon dont il a contribué à son champ ou à sa discipline, dans une langue que tous les membres du Comité peuvent comprendre, | (a) a one-page submission, prepared by the nominee, describing the area of research and how it has contributed to the field or discipline, in language that any member of the Committee can understand; |

| (c) les recommandations des directeurs de département et des comités du personnel enseignant des départements, et | (c) recommendations of department chairs and departmental teaching personnel committees; |
| (d) au moins cinq lettres d’évaluateurs externes qui seront sollicitées par la faculté afin de déterminer l’importance et l'influence des contributions du membre dans son domaine d'activités en précisant quels renseignements permettent d'affirmer que le chercheur a acquis personnellement et a procuré à l'Université une réputation d'excellence, en raison de l'importance et du caractère exceptionnel de ses travaux de recherche, | (d) at least five letters from external assessors who will be asked by the faculty to assess the importance of the member’s contributions within her field and how the research work has influenced the discipline by specifying what information allows them to state that the researcher has earned distinction for herself and for the University as a result of the importance and exceptional characteristics of her research work, |

| 7. RELATIONS PUBLIQUES | 7. PUBLIC RELATIONS |
| 7.1 La remise du prix est organisée par le CABINET DU RECTEUR de l'Université d'Ottawa, sous la direction du Comité et sous réserve de son approbation. | 7.1 The award ceremony shall be organized by the OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT of the University of Ottawa, under the direction of and subject to approval by the Committee. |
| 7.2 Chaque année, l'Université établit le budget nécessaire pour couvrir les coûts de publicité liés au prix. C'est le SERVICE DU MARKETING ET DES COMMUNICATIONS de l'Université d'Ottawa qui est chargé de la publicité, sous la direction du Comité et sous réserve de son approbation, selon les fonds disponibles. | 7.2 The University shall annually budget an amount it deems appropriate to cover publicity costs associated with the award. Publicity for the award is to be carried out by the MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS SERVICE of the University of Ottawa, under the direction of and subject to approval by the Committee, within limits of available funds. |
| 8. COMPOSITION ET MANDAT DU COMITÉ | 8. COMPOSITION AND TERMS OF REFERENCE OF THE COMMITTEE |
| 8.1 COMPOSITION Le Comité du prix de recherche compte les membres ci-dessous: | 8.1 COMPOSITION The members of the Research Awards Committee shall be: |
| (a) le président de l'APUO, membre d'office et président du Comité; | (a) the president of APUO, ex officio, as chair of the Committee; |

| Les membres du Comité choisissent, au sein du Comité, une personne qui agit à titre de secrétaire. | A secretary shall be elected by and from among the members of the Committee. |
| 8.2 RAPPORTS HIÉRARCHIQUES Le Comité relève du recteur de l'Université et du Comité exécutif de l'APUO. | 8.2 REPORTING The Committee reports concurrently to the President of the University and the Executive Committee of APUO. |
| 8.3 MANDAT Le Comité assure la gestion du prix et choisit les lauréats, sous réserve des dispositions du présent document. Le Comité peut décider de ne retenir aucune candidature au cours d'une année s'il estime que personne ne répond aux critères. | 8.3 MANDATE The Committee shall administer the award and select recipients, subject to the provisions of this document. The Committee may decline to select a recipient in any year in which it finds that none of the candidates meets the criteria set out herein. |
| 8.4 RENSEIGNEMENTS Le Comité établit son choix en fonction des mémoires présentés par les doyens et des rapports de personnes compétentes qu'il invite à lui fournir des renseignements supplémentaires. | 8.4 INFORMATION The Committee shall make its selection on the basis of the files submitted by the candidates' deans and submissions by qualified persons whom the Committee invites to provide it with additional information. |
| 8.5 RAPPORT ANNUEL à titre d'information pour les comités à venir, il convient que le Comité du prix de recherche résume son expérience et ses réflexions sur le prix dans un bref rapport rédigé à la fin de l'année universitaire. | 8.5 ANNUAL REPORT For the benefit of subsequent years' Research Awards Committees, the Committee should summarize its experience and lessons learned in a brief report to be completed at the end of the academic year. |
| 9. ÉCHÉANCES | 9. TARGET DATES |
| 9.1 Le Comité est constitué au début de chaque année universitaire et il devrait se réunir à compter d'octobre afin d'examiner les modalités et critères de sélection, compte tenu de l'expérience des comités antérieurs. | 9.1 The Committee is to be established at the beginning of each academic year and should start its meetings in October to review procedures and selection criteria in light of preceding years' experience. |
| 9.2 En septembre, le recteur demande aux doyens d'obtenir la collaboration des comités du personnel enseignant dans le choix des finalistes et dans la préparation des dossiers justificatifs, tandis que l'APUO communique aux facultés les directives de mises en candidature. | 9.2 In September, the President will write to deans to request the cooperation of Teaching Personnel Committees in the selection of candidates and the preparation of supporting files, and APUO will send guidelines for nominations to the faculties. |
| 9.3 Les mises en candidature doivent être soumises aux doyens à la fin de la deuxième semaine complète de novembre et au Comité du prix de recherche à la fin de la deuxième semaine complète de décembre. Le Comité termine ses délibérations et choisit un lauréat à la fin de la deuxième semaine complète de janvier. | 9.3 Nominations are to be submitted to deans by the end of the second full week of November and to the Research Awards Committee by the end of the second full week of December. The Committee is to complete its deliberations and select a recipient by the end of the second full week of January. |
| 10. CONTRIBUTIONS | 10. CONTRIBUTIONS |
| 10.1 Chacun des trois organismes commanditaires fixe le montant de sa contribution à la prime, étant entendu qu'un organisme commanditaire ne doit pas réduire sa contribution sans en avertir les deux autres organismes au moins douze mois à l'avance. | 10.1 Each of the three sponsoring organizations shall determine its contribution to the honorarium from time to time, it being understood that a sponsoring organization will not decrease its contribution without at least 12 months' notice to the other two organizations. |
| 10.2 Chacun des organismes continuera à participer aux activités liées au prix suivant les modalités en vigueur à la date à laquelle le présent document a été approuvé par les trois organismes participants. | 10.2 Each of the sponsoring organizations shall continue to contribute to activities related to the award on the same terms and conditions as prevailed on the date on which this document was approved by the three participating organizations. |
| 11. MODIFICATIONS | 11. MODIFICATIONS |
| 11.1 Les dispositions du présent document peuvent être modifiées en tout temps d'un commun accord entre les trois organismes participants. | 11.1 The terms of this document may be modified at any time by mutual agreement of the three sponsoring organizations. |
| 11.2 Un organisme peut retirer sa participation au prix à condition de donner un préavis d'au moins douze mois aux deux autres organismes participants. | 11.2 A sponsoring organization may withdraw from further sponsorship of the award upon giving the other two sponsors at least 12 months' notice of its intent to withdraw. |
