1. PRIX 1. THE AWARD
1.1 Le PRIX D'EXCELLENCE EN ENSEIGNEMENT DE L'UNIVERSITÉ D'OTTAWA, ci-après appelé le prix, est parrainé par l'Université d'Ottawa (l'Université), l'Association des professeurs de l'Université d'Ottawa (l'APUO) et l'Association des anciens de l'Université d'Ottawa (l'Association des anciens). 1.1 The UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING, hereinafter referred to as the award, is an award sponsored by the University of Ottawa (the University), the Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa (APUO), and the Alumni Association of the University of Ottawa (the Alumni Association).
1.2  à compter de l'année universitaire 1987-1988, le prix remplace le Prix des anciens pour excellence en enseignement, créé en 1976 et accordé pour la dernière fois en 1986-1987. 1.2 Starting with the academic year 1987-1988, the award replaces the Alumni Award for Excellence in Teaching which was created in 1976 and was last awarded in the academic year 1986-1987.
1.3 Un prix est accordé chaque année universitaire pour autant qu'il y ait des candidatures appropriées. 1.3 One award shall be given in every academic year in which appropriate candidates are nominated.
1.4 Le prix est administré aux termes des modalités énoncées ci-dedans ou établies conformément aux dispositions du présent document. 1.4 The award shall be administered pursuant to policies and procedures set out herein or established in accordance with the provisions of this document.
2. BUT 2. OBJECTIVE
Le prix a pour objet de souligner l'importance de l'enseignement à l'Université d'Ottawa en reconnaissant chaque année l'apport exceptionnel d'un membre du personnel enseignant à l'enseignement universitaire. The objective of the award is to focus attention on teaching at the University of Ottawa by recognizing annually a member of its teaching staff for outstanding contributions to university teaching.
3. PRIX ET CONFÉRENCE PUBLIQUE 3. THE AWARD AND PUBLIC LECTURE
3.1 Le lauréat (le professeur de l'année) reçoit une prime octroyée par les organismes participants. 3.1 The recipient of the award (the Teacher of the Year) shall receive an honorarium, as provided by the sponsoring organizations.
3.2 Le prix est remis lors d'une cérémonie appropriée qui a lieu normalement à l'automne de l'année où le prix est décerné. 3.2 The award will be presented to the recipient in the course of an appropriate ceremony, normally held in the fall of the year in which the award is made.
3.3 La cérémonie est habituellement précédée d'une conférence publique (la Conférence du professeur de l'année) prononcée par le lauréat.  Son sujet est libre mais la conférence devrait porter sur des questions d'intérêt général pour la communauté universitaire et ne devrait pas se limiter aux intérêts de recherche du conférencier.  Sans être obligatoire, le recours aux deux langues officielles au cours de l'exposé est souhaitable. 3.3 The award ceremony will normally be preceded by a public lecture (the Teaching Lecture) by the recipient of the award. Although the choice of subject of the lecture is left to the recipient, the lecture should contain matters of general interest to the academic community and should not be limited to the speaker's research interests. It is desirable but not obligatory that the speaker present some material in English and some in French.
4. COMITÉ DU PRIX D'ENSEIGNEMENT 4. TEACHING AWARDS COMMITTEE
L'administration des prix et le choix des lauréats relèvent du COMITÉ DU PRIX D'EXCELLENCE EN ENSEIGNEMENT DE L'UNIVERSITÉ D'OTTAWA (le Comité du prix d'enseignement). La composition et le mandat du Comité sont précisés ci-après. Administration of the award and selection of recipients shall be the responsibility of the COMMITTEE FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING (the Teaching Awards Committee). The composition and terms of reference of the Committee shall be as set out herein.
5. CRITÈRES DE SÉLECTION 5. SELECTION CRITERIA
5.1 Le prix doit reconnaître un apport exceptionnel à l'enseignement universitaire, sans toutefois que cet apport ne se limite à l'enseignement en classe.  Il est tenu compte de toute contribution à l'enseignement.  Suit une liste non exhaustive de contributions types. 5.1 It is intended that the award recognize outstanding contributions to university teaching. This should not be narrowly defined and should not necessarily be limited to classroom teaching. Rather, contributions to all aspects of teaching should be considered. Those in the following list, which is not intended to be exhaustive, are considered typical.
  • Conception de cours et création de programmes.
  • Élaboration de nouvelles pédagogies.
  • Rédaction de manuels.
  • Élaboration de programmes
  • d'enseignement coopératif.
  • Élaboration de programmes d'éducation permanente.
  • Élaboration de programmes interdisciplinaires.
  • Élaboration de nouvelles techniques d'évaluation et de docimologie.
  • Conception et supervision de laboratoires.
  • Direction de séminaires d'études supérieures.
  • Supervision de thèses et orientation.
  • Participation communautaire pertinente.
  • Course design and curriculum development.
  • Development of new padagogy.
    Writing textbooks.
  • Development of cooperative education programmes.
  • Development of continuing education programmes.
  • Development of interdisciplinary programmes.
  • Development of new techniques for student evaluation and testing.
  • Laboratory design and supervision.
  • Conduct of graduate seminars.
  • Supervision and guidance of thesis students.
  • Relevant community involvement.
5.2 Le lauréat n'est pas tenu d'exceller dans plus d'un domaine de l'enseignement, mais doit exceller en enseignement magistral, peu importe ses autres contributions pédagogiques.  Dans la mesure du possible, il faut faire une nette distinction entre l'apport à l'enseignement et l'apport à la recherche. 5.2 It is not necessary that the award winner excel in more than one area of teaching; but excellence in the lecture hall is considered essential no matter what other contributions the nominee has made. Insofar as possible, a clear distinction must be made between teaching and research contributions.
5.3 Au cours de ses délibérations, le Comité tient compte des différences entre les disciplines et des exigences particulières des écoles professionnelles. 5.3 In making its selection of a recipient, the Committee will give cognizance to the differences among disciplines and the special requirements of professional schools.
5.4 Seuls les membres permanents ou ayant un poste menant à la permanence, appelés ci-après membres réguliers, sont admissibles au prix. 5.4 Only members with tenure or on a "tenure-track" appointment, hereinafter referred to as regular members, are eligible for the award.
6. MISES EN CANDIDATURE 6. NOMINATION PROCEDURE
6.1 Les étudiants, les anciens et les membres du personnel enseignant ou administratif de l'Université peuvent proposer des candidats au prix.  Les mises en candidature sont présentées au doyen de la faculté du candidat. 6.1 A nomination for the award may be initiated by any University of Ottawa student, alumna, faculty member, or administrator. Nominations should be addressed to the dean of the nominee's faculty.
6.2 Le comité du personnel enseignant de la faculté établit une liste de finalistes qui est transmise au Comité du prix d'enseignement.  Après avoir choisi les finalistes et confirmé leur intention de se présenter, le comité du personnel enseignant prépare un mémoire sur chaque candidature.  Le doyen transmet les mémoires, avec les documents à l'appui et sa propre recommandation, au Comité du prix d'enseignement. 6.2 The teaching personnel committee of the faculty shall select the nominations which are to be forwarded to the Teaching Awards Committee. After selecting nominees and ascertaining their willingness to be candidates for the award, the teaching personnel committee shall prepare a brief in support of each candidate. The dean shall forward the briefs, along with appropriate supporting documentation and her own recommendation, to the Teaching Awards Committee.
6.3 Les mises en candidature doivent se faire aussi objectivement que possible et sur une base étendue. Tout renseignement pertinent peut être présenté au Comité, mais la documentation doit englober: 6.3 Nominations for the award should be made as objectively as possible and should be broadly based. Any relevant evidence may be submitted to the Committee. The submitted documentation should, in any event, include:
(a) l'opinion d'étudiants, ainsi que d'anciens,
(b) des évaluations par des pairs, et
(c) les recommandations des directeurs de département et des comités du personnel enseignant des départements.		 (a) opinions of students and former students,
(b) peer evaluations, and
(c) recommendations of department chairs and departmental teaching personnel committees;
avec, le cas échéant, les modifications appropriées apportées à (c). with appropriate modifications to (c) where necessary.
6.4 Chaque faculté peut présenter au Comité une, deux ou trois candidatures si elle compte, le 1er septembre de l'année universitaire en cause, jusqu'à 50, ou de 51 à 100, ou plus de 100 membres réguliers, respectivement.  Exceptionnellement, le Comité peut accepter des candidatures supplémentaires. 6.4 Each faculty is entitled to submit to the Committee 1 or 2 or 3 nominations if it has, on 1 September of the academic year in question, up to 50, or 51 to 100, or over 100 regular staff members, respectively. The Committee may, in exceptional circumstances, accept additional nominations.
7. RELATIONS PUBLIQUES 7. PUBLIC RELATIONS
7.1 La remise du prix est organisée par le CABINET DU RECTEUR de l'Université d'Ottawa, sous la direction du Comité et sous réserve de son approbation. 7.1 The award ceremony shall be organized by the OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT of the University of Ottawa, under the direction of and subject to approval by the Committee.
7.2 Chaque année, l'Université établit le budget nécessaire pour couvrir les coûts de publicité liés au prix. C'est le SERVICE DU MARKETING ET DES COMMUNICATIONS de l'Université d'Ottawa qui est chargé de la publicité, sous la direction du Comité et sous réserve de son approbation, selon les fonds disponibles. 7.2 The University shall annually budget an amount it deems appropriate to cover publicity costs associated with the award. Publicity for the award is to be carried out by the MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS SERVICE of the University of Ottawa, under the direction of and subject to approval by the Committee, within limits of available funds.
8. COMPOSITION ET MANDAT DU COMITÉ 8. COMPOSITION AND TERMS OF REFERENCE OF THE COMMITTEE
8.1 COMPOSITION Le Comité du prix d'enseignement compte les membres ci-dessous: 8.1 COMPOSITION The members of the Teaching Awards Committee shall be:
(a) le président de l'APUO, membre d'office et président du Comité; (a) the president of APUO, ex officio, as chair of the Committee;
(b) deux membres nommés par le recteur de l'Université; (b) two members appointed by the Rector of the University;
(c) deux membres nommés par l'APUO (normalement les deux derniers lauréats); (c) two members appointed by APUO (normally two recipients of the award);
(d) deux membres nommés par l'Association des anciens. (d) two members appointed by the Alumni Association.
(e) un membre nommé par la Fédération étudiante de l'Université d'Ottawa (un étudiant actuel à temps plein); (e) one member appointed by the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa (a currently registered full-time student);
(f) un membre nommé par l'Association des étudiant.e.s. diplômé.e.s. (f) one member appointed by the Graduate Students' Association.
Les membres du Comité choisissent, au sein du Comité, une personne qui agit à titre de secrétaire. A secretary shall be elected by and from among the members of the Committee.
8.2 RAPPORTS HIÉRARCHIQUES Le Comité relève du recteur de l'Université et du Comité exécutif de l'APUO. 8.2 REPORTING The Committee reports concurrently to the Rector of the University and the Executive Committee of APUO.
8.3 MANDAT Le Comité assure la gestion du prix et choisit les lauréats, sous réserve des dispositions du présent document. Le Comité peut décider de ne retenir aucune candidature au cours d'une année s'il estime que personne ne répond aux critères. 8.3 MANDATE The Committee shall administer the award and select recipients, subject to the provisions of this document. The Committee may decline to select a recipient in any year in which it finds that none of the candidates meets the criteria set out herein.
8.4 RENSEIGNEMENTS Le Comité établit son choix en fonction des mémoires présentés par les doyens et des rapports de personnes compétentes qu'il invite à lui fournir des renseignements supplémentaires. 8.4 INFORMATION The Committee shall make its selection on the basis of the files submitted by the candidates' deans and submissions by qualified persons whom the Committee invites to provide it with additional information.
8.5 RAPPORT ANNUEL à titre d'information pour les comités à venir, il convient que le Comité du prix d'enseignement résume son expérience et ses réflexions sur le prix dans un bref rapport rédigé à la fin de l'année universitaire. 8.5 ANNUAL REPORT For the benefit of subsequent years' Teaching Awards Committees, the Committee should summarize its experience and lessons learned in a brief report to be completed at the end of the academic year.
8.6 AUTRES PRIX Le Comité participe aux mises en candidature provenant de l'Université d'Ottawa en vue de l'obtention d'autres prix d'enseignement auxquels sont admissibles les professeurs de l'Université (par exemple les bourses de l'UAPUO), pourvu que l'aide du Comité soit dûment demandée.  Dans ses délibérations, le Comité s'inspire des critères et règlements de l'association ou de l'organisme qui accorde le prix. 8.6 OTHER AWARDS The Committee shall assist in the submission of nominations from the University of Ottawa for other teaching awards for which professors of this university are eligible (e.g. the OCUFA award), provided the Committee's assistance has been duly solicited. In its deliberations, the Committee shall be guided by the criteria and procedures for the association or agency granting the award.
9. ÉCHÉANCES 9. TARGET DATES
9.1 Le Comité est constitué au début de chaque année universitaire et il devrait se réunir à compter d'octobre afin d'examiner les modalités et critères de sélection, compte tenu de l'expérience des comités antérieurs. 9.1 The Committee is to be established at the beginning of each academic year and should start its meetings in October to review procedures and selection criteria in light of preceding years' experience.
9.2 Au début de janvier, le recteur demande aux doyens d'obtenir la collaboration des comités du personnel enseignant dans le choix des finalistes et dans la préparation des dossiers justificatifs, tandis que l'APUO communique aux facultés les directives de mises en candidature. 9.2 In early January, the Rector will write to deans to request the cooperation of teaching personnel committees in the selection of candidates and the preparation of supporting files, and APUO will send guidelines for nominations to the faculties.
9.3 Les mises en candidature doivent être soumises aux doyens à la fin de la deuxième semaine complète du mois de février et au Comité du prix d'enseignement à la fin de la deuxième semaine complète du mois de mars.  Le Comité termine ses délibérations et choisit un lauréat à la fin de la deuxième semaine complète du mois d'avril. 9.3 Nominations are to be submitted to deans by the end of the second full week of February and to the Teaching Awards Committee by the end of the second full week of March. The Committee is to complete its deliberations and select a recipient by the end of the second full week of April.
10. CONTRIBUTIONS 10. CONTRIBUTIONS
10.1 Chacun des trois organismes participants fixe le montant de sa contribution à la prime, étant entendu qu'un organisme participant ne doit pas réduire sa contribution sans en avertir les deux autres organismes au moins douze mois à l'avance. 10.1 Each of the three sponsoring organizations shall determine its contribution to the honorarium from time to time, it being understood that a sponsoring organization will not decrease its contribution without at least 12 months' notice to the other two organizations.
10.2 Chacun des organismes continuera à participer aux activités liées au prix suivant les modalités en vigueur à la date à laquelle le présent document a été approuvé par les trois organismes participants. 10.2 Each of the sponsoring organizations shall continue to contribute to activities related to the award on the same terms and conditions as prevailed on the date on which this document was approved by the three participating organizations.
11. MODIFICATIONS 11. MODIFICATIONS
11.1 Les dispositions du présent document peuvent être modifiées en tout temps d'un commun accord entre les trois organismes participants. 11.1 The terms of this document may be modified at any time by mutual agreement of the three sponsoring organizations.
11.2 Un organisme peut retirer sa participation au prix à condition de donner un préavis d'au moins douze mois aux deux autres organismes participants. 11.2 A sponsoring organization may withdraw from further sponsorship of the award upon giving the other two sponsors at least 12 months' notice of its intent to withdraw.
